- The US State Department announced Rubio's talks with the Cambodian Prime Minister on Thailand
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Mane about the ongoing conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. This was announced on December 25 by the US State Department on its website.
"Secretary Rubio reiterated President Trump's desire for peace and the need for full implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreements," the publication said.
Secretary Rubio also confirmed that the United States stands ready to facilitate discussions to ensure peace and stability between Cambodia and Thailand.
On December 8, the Cambodian military opened fire on the Thai Anupong base. In response, the Thai army called on residents of the border areas to evacuate to shelters due to the threat of escalation of the conflict. The next day, fighting between Thailand and Cambodia unfolded along the entire joint border, affecting five regions and hundreds of citizens on both sides.
On December 12, US President Donald Trump announced that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a cease-fire and respect for an earlier peace agreement. Later, Thai Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun said that the country would continue to fight and would not stop the conflict. Trump threatened the countries with the imposition of duties if they refused to cease fire.
