NBC talked about the split between Rubio and Witkoff over Ukraine
Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are vying for the role of the US's lead negotiator on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. The corresponding statement was made by NBC on December 22.
The article cites several cases of disorganization in their joint actions, which, according to the channel's sources, may indicate a struggle between the two American politicians.
"Rubio was supposed to participate in peace talks with Ukrainian officials in Switzerland, but Witkoff left earlier, which, according to some officials, was an attempt to get ahead of him. <...> Witkoff did not inform Rubio and other State Department officials about his travel plans," one of them quotes NBC.
When asked about the rivalry between Witkoff and the independent steps that, according to rumors, he could take without the knowledge of the leadership, the White House replied that this was impossible, since all his actions were taking place according to instructions and that his phone conversations and place of residence were closely monitored by intelligence agencies.
Rubio said on December 19 that the United States is capable of bringing Russia and Ukraine to compromises on resolving the crisis in the near future. He also noted that the final decision is not made by the United States. According to Rubio, the United States cannot force the parties to settle, since the states themselves must express a desire to conclude a deal.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the "Results of the Year", announced Russia's readiness to immediately stop hostilities if Moscow's conditions on security guarantees were fulfilled. The Russian leader also stressed that the state does not reject compromises within the framework of the plan to resolve the crisis in Ukraine and is ready to resolve the conflict peacefully.
