"We are trying to understand Russia's position. <...> We understand Ukraine's position, and we are trying to find what these positions have in common. It could happen this week, maybe next month," he said, the broadcast was carried out on the YouTube channel of the US State Department.

According to the Secretary of State, the final decision is not made by the United States. He clarified that the United States cannot force the parties to settle, since the countries themselves must want to conclude a deal.

Also on December 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the "Results of the Year" that the Russian Federation was ready to immediately stop the fighting if Moscow's conditions on security guarantees were met. He added that Russia does not reject compromises within the framework of the settlement plan in Ukraine and is ready to resolve the conflict peacefully.
