The new law on the increased tax on excess profits of banks is unlikely to be adopted in Russia. This was announced on December 18 by financial market expert, economist Andrey Barkhota.

"If more money is withdrawn from the banking sector, it is possible that banks will have to be recapitalized later. I'm not even saying that they were capitalized by 600 billion rubles," he said. 360.ru .

According to him, if the industry situation worsens, banks will begin to accumulate significant loan reserves, which may lead to the full use of accumulated capital. The economist noted that in a few months, banks may not have increased incomes.

In his opinion, banks are compensating for losses due to more expensive loans and a decrease in the approval rate of applications. The economist concluded that all these measures will eventually affect the consumer, who will become the main payer.

Valery Tumin, a member of the expert council on the development of the digital economy under the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, told Izvestia on December 10 that the Central Bank of the Russian Federation could consider two possible solutions at the December meeting: lowering the rate to 16% or keeping it at the current level of 16.5%. He recalled that the Bank of Russia had previously set a benchmark for an average rate in the range of 13-15% in 2026.
