The West justifies the seizure of Russian assets with rhetoric about the "Russian threat." This was announced on December 16 by Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and special presidential representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries.

"Why NATO/UK/EU (EU. — Ed.) suddenly began to co—ordinate and feverishly promote the narrative of the "Russian threat" <...> Corrupt globalist arsonists of the conflict just want to steal Russian reserves," he wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to Dmitriev, the escalation of such an agenda serves not only to distract attention from the problems of mass migration, rising crime and the economic downturn, but is also directly related to the desire of Western countries to confiscate Russia's frozen funds.

Dmitriev said on December 15 that Russia would be able to challenge the freezing of reserves in the EU, and Europe would have to pay Ukraine's bills. He stressed that EU representatives, by attempting to illegally confiscate Russia's assets, "are making mistakes." He also expressed confidence that due to the victory of the Russian Federation in court, the positions of the EU itself, the euro currency and the Euroclear depository, in which assets are stored, will suffer.

The statement of claim of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation against Euroclear for 18.1 trillion rubles was submitted to the Arbitration Court of Moscow on December 15. Prior to this, the Central Bank announced that it would file a claim for damages against Euroclear. The regulator clarified that as a result of Euroclear's actions, the Bank of Russia lost the ability to dispose of its funds and securities.

In response, Euroclear declared its readiness to defend itself in Russian courts on claims due to the blocking of Russian assets. Paula Pinho, the official representative of the European Commission (EC), said that the EU is confident in the legality of the use of frozen assets of Russia.
