- Starmer discussed with von der Leyen the use of frozen assets of the Russian Federation
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine. This was announced on December 13 on the website of the Office of the British Prime Minister.
"The Prime Minister spoke with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Their discussion focused on the ongoing work on the peace plan promoted by the United States... they also discussed the latest developments on the use of frozen sovereign Russian assets," the publication says.
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow would take retaliatory measures to the decision of the European Union (EU) on the indefinite blocking of Russian assets. She stressed that disposing of Russia's sovereign assets without its consent — whether it's freezing them, seizing them, or trying to present the actual confiscation as a "reparation loan" — is illegal and grossly violates international law.
