The Italian government intends to approve a parliamentary decree that will allow the country to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine. This was reported on December 2 by the Reuters news agency.

It is specified that the decree will be discussed at a preliminary meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on December 3, but the date on which the final approval of the decision will be given has not yet been determined, according to a published government document.

Also, the planned decree does not specify the deadline for a new supply permit, but all currently approved documents allowed the transfer of weapons within one year without additional parliamentary approval of each new aid package.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni has supported Kiev since taking office at the end of 2022, but recently disagreements have intensified in her government coalition over the provision of military assistance to Ukraine.

Thus, the Deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of Italy, Matteo Salvini, said that assistance to Ukraine would not put an end to the Ukrainian conflict and could increase corruption, referring to the corruption scandal that has recently erupted in Ukraine.

Earlier, on October 20, Bloomberg reported that the Italian side had changed its position on the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine and expressed its willingness to participate in the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) initiative. In addition, it is reported that the Italian side has already participated in the development of about ten aid packages to Ukraine, as well as supplied Kiev with air defense systems, in particular SAMP/T.

Prior to that, on August 28, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that the leaders of Italy's ruling coalition intend to discuss sending their sappers to mine Ukrainian territories and offshore areas in order to restore their security. It is noted that this issue cannot be resolved quickly, any action by Italy will be possible only if a truce is established.
