Ruslan Isaev, a psychiatrist, narcologist, and head of a psychiatric and drug treatment clinic, told how you can diagnose alcoholism yourself.

In conversation with Lenta.Ru On Friday, November 28, the expert noted that alcohol dependence is indicated not so much by the amount of alcohol as by a combination of changes in behavior, emotional state and physical well-being.

According to him, in the early stages, addiction can be disguised as "festive occasions" or "stress relief." He called the loss of quantitative and situational control the first alarm signal — when a person plans to drink a little, but exceeds the dose, or promises to drink only on weekends, but finds a reason on weekdays.

An increase in tolerance also speaks about the emerging addiction: more alcohol is needed to feel the effect, the doctor explained. Another sign is the disappearance of natural protective reactions, such as nausea when consumed excessively.

The expert added that psychological cravings for alcohol should also cause anxiety, when thoughts of drinking appear in advance and alcohol becomes a habitual way to relax. Changes in behavior — irritability, anxiety, or sleep problems when unable to drink — may also indicate the onset of the disease.

He advised to conduct a simple test: completely give up alcohol for 3-4 weeks and monitor your condition. If there is no craving, there is probably no dependence. If tension, irritability, or attempts to "find a reason" arise, you should consult a specialist.

In January, psychotherapist and narcologist Marat Saraev dispelled one of the myths about dealing with a hangover. According to him, to minimize a hangover, you do not need to drink a lot of water, cranberry juice or rosehip. Only bed rest and certain types of medications, including psychotropic drugs, will help.
