Vsevolod Shilovsky is a name that has become a symbol of an entire era in Russian cinema. The People's Artist of the RSFSR, director, teacher and screenwriter lived a long, eventful life, in which there was a place for the Moscow Art Theater stage, directing, and creating his own theater. He is most remembered by the audience for his roles in the films "Military field Novel", "Torpedo Bombers", "Interdevochka" and "Beloved woman mechanic Gavrilov".

Childhood and youth in Moscow

Vsevolod Shilovsky was born on June 3, 1938 in Moscow into an intelligent family. His father, Nikolai Vladimirovich, was a graduate of the Conservatory and the Zhukovsky Military Engineering Academy, was fluent in four languages and led an aviation enterprise. My mother worked at an aircraft engine factory.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the father went to the front as a volunteer, and the mother and son were evacuated to Kazan. They returned to Moscow shortly before the end of the war. The parents divorced, and the mother raised her son alone. The boy grew up weak and sickly. To improve his health, he was recommended to take up swimming.

However, he was not accepted into the section because of his excessive thinness. For two weeks Vsevolod came to the section every day until he was enrolled. He showed enviable perseverance and within six months received the first junior class in swimming. Then he became interested in speed skating, joined the Moscow national team, and practiced SAMBO.

Leadership qualities were also evident in school. Shilovsky was chairman of the council of the detachment and the squad. In addition, he participated in a drama club, sang and danced, deciding to become an actor in the future.

A quarter of a century on the stage of the Moscow Art Theater

Already in the ninth grade, driven by a desire to test his strength, Vsevolod attempted to enroll in the Moscow Art Theater Studio School, but was refused due to lack of a certificate. Despite his mother's persuasions to get a "serious" profession, the young man did not give up on his dream. After working as a locksmith for some time, in 1957 he successfully entered the Moscow Art Theater Studio School for the course of Alexander Karev.

Having brilliantly graduated in 1961, the charismatic actor proved to be incredibly in demand. He received offers from six metropolitan theaters at once, but he chose the Moscow Art Theater without hesitation. Shilovsky appeared on the stage of the theater for more than a quarter of a century. Over the years, he has performed many memorable roles and proved himself to be a talented director.

After the split of the Moscow Art Theater in 1987, which the actor took extremely hard, he decided to leave the stage, focusing entirely on cinema.

Prominent film roles: from "The Experts" to "Kamenskaya"

Shilovsky's film debut took place back in 1965 in the film "Our House", where he played a cameo role as a passenger. The actor became widely known in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, several paintings with his participation were released. Among them are "The Investigation is being conducted by Experts" (1977), the historical film "Syndicate-2" (1981), the comedies "The Beloved Woman of mechanic Gavrilov" (1982) and "In Love of my own volition" (1982).

A special place in the actor's filmography was occupied by the role of composer Rossini in the mini-series Niccolo Paganini (1982), as well as filming in Peter Todorovsky's film A Military Field Novel (1983), where he played Grisha, Lyuba's former boyfriend. In the 1990s and 2000s, the actor remained in demand, starring in the TV series Kamenskaya and The Turkish March. One of his last works was the role of the ambassador in the film "Midshipmen IV" (2023).

In parallel with his acting career, Shilovsky successfully tried his hand at directing. His first major work was the multi-part film news "Day by Day" (1970s). Among his other directorial projects are the adventure film "Swindlers" (1990), the television series "Opera—1. Homicide Squad Chronicles" and "Hokkaido Police. Russian department".

Teaching and creating your own theater

Teaching has become another important facet of Vsevolod Shilovsky's talent. He taught at the Moscow Art Theater Studio School and at VGIK, where he led an acting workshop. Among his students are the stars of Russian cinema Vladimir Menshov, Andrey Myagkov, Nikolai Karachentsov, Evgeny Kindinov.

In 2017, the director realized his long-held dream. He founded the Moscow Shilovsky Theater, assembling a troupe of his students. Until the last days of his life, the director led this project, actively engaged in expanding the repertoire.

In 1986, the actor was awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of the RSFSR. Vsevolod Shilovsky's contribution to Russian culture was also recognized by a number of high state awards.:

The personal life of Vsevolod Shilovsky

The actor's personal life was intense and multifaceted. He was married three times. His first wife was the actress Evgenia Uralova. Their marriage, concluded in the 1960s, lasted for several years. For the second time, the actor married actress Nina Semenova. In 1970, the couple had a son, Ilya, who became a director and playwright. He passed away in 2021.

His third wife is musician Natalia Tsekhanovskaya. This union turned out to be the longest and most lasting. The couple lived together until Natalia's death in February 2025. In 1974, they became parents to a son, Pavel, who connected his life with the film business.

The Shilovsky acting dynasty continues in his grandchildren. The most famous is the granddaughter of Aglaya Shilovskaya (born 1993). She is actively involved in film and television projects.

Last days of life

Until his last days, the actor and director led an active life, managing his theater. In early 2025, he reported health problems. He was diagnosed with jaundice, and since then, the actor has been regularly treated in various clinics. In September, he held a press conference, telling about the plans of the theater.

Vsevolod Shilovsky died on November 26, 2025 at the age of 87. Shortly before his death, a reissue of his autobiographical book "Two Lives" was published, where many pages are devoted to the Moscow Art Theater, student youth and work in cinema.
