The death toll from typhoons in the Philippines has reached 297.
The total death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi and super Typhoon Fung Wong in the Philippines has risen to 297. This was reported on November 17 by the Philippine News Agency (PNA), citing the National Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (NDRRMC).
According to the latest data, 269 people died due to typhoon Kalmaegi, many of them were found in Cebu Province, Negros Island, as well as in the Western Visayas and Eastern Visayas regions. Another 523 people were injured, 113 people are missing.
As for super typhoon Fung Wong, 28 deaths were reported, most of them were found in Ifugao province in the north of Luzon Island, 52 people were injured, two more have not yet been found, the local agency reports.
The country's Civil Defense Department ordered the provision of assistance to the victims in the amount of about 838.5 million Philippine pesos, as well as the restoration of damaged houses.
Prior to that, on November 9, 224 deaths were reported in the Philippines as a result of Typhoon Kalmaegi.
More than 150,000 people were evacuated in the Philippines on November 3 due to typhoon Kalmaegi, with authorities warning of torrential rains, winds and waves up to 3 m high. It was noted that villagers on the central island of Negros had also been warned that heavy rains could cause volcanic mudslides on the Kanlaon volcano, which has been spewing clouds of ash and steam in recent months.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos in connection with the victims and destruction caused by the typhoon.
