In August, the United States conducted successful tests of the B61-12 thermonuclear aerial bomb without a live charge. This was announced on November 14 by the Sandia National Laboratory under the US Department of Energy.

"The August tests were the only flight tests of backup samples of the B61-12 joint test units on the F-35 aircraft, confirming the comprehensive reliability of the aircraft, crews and weapons system during missions," the statement said.

It is noted that flight tests were conducted in the period from August 19 to August 21 in Nevada.

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, said on November 13 that there were currently no signs that the United States was preparing for nuclear tests. He also noted that the Russian side does not have any information indicating Washington's practical preparation for such actions.

Prior to that, on October 29, American leader Donald Trump issued a statement instructing the Pentagon to begin testing nuclear weapons "on an equal basis." Chris Wright, the head of the US Department of Energy, said that Washington's nuclear tests will be subcritical — they will take place without nuclear explosions.
