Mass protests have begun in Belgrade over plans to build a Trump Tower.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Belgrade, opposing the construction of the Trump Tower hotel complex in the city center. This was reported by Bloomberg on November 11.

"Students in the Serbian capital Belgrade held a demonstration over plans to build the Trump Tower hotel complex on the site of the former headquarters of the Yugoslav army," the publication says.

It is specified that the Trump Tower is planned to be built on the site of the former headquarters of the Yugoslav army, which was destroyed as a result of NATO bombing and has been "in ruins" since 1999. According to the agency, the protesters surrounded the place in an attempt to protect the cultural heritage site.

The project for the construction of the Trump Tower hotel complex, which costs $500 million, was presented by Affinity Partners. The organization was founded by the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner.

The project provides for the construction of at least two skyscrapers, including a 175-room hotel and 1.5 thousand luxury apartments in the center of Belgrade, across the street from the Serbian government building.

According to Bloomberg, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic supported the construction of Trump Tower, as a result, the country's lawmakers voted to accelerate the preparation of the project. The article emphasizes that such a step will eliminate legal obstacles and circumvent the rules of urban planning.

As noted by Desimir Tanovich, an expert on the preservation of works of art and adviser to the State Administration for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, this bill is "illegal, as it contradicts the law on cultural heritage."
