Lukashenko instructed to organize negotiations with Lithuania on the situation on the border

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to organize negotiations with Lithuania on normalizing the situation on the joint border. This was announced on November 11 by the Telegram channel Pool One.

"The President instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to organize negotiations on the normalization of the situation and the resumption of full-fledged functioning of checkpoints on the joint border (with Lithuania — Ed.)," the message says.

Alexander Volfovich, Secretary of State of the Security Council, was tasked with organizing the negotiation process. The decision was made after receiving proposals from the Lithuanian authorities to resolve the border situation.

Earlier, on November 7, Lukashenko gave orders to organize the actions of the Belarusian border guards on the border with Lithuania. It is noted that it was decided to build a systematic work along the entire border line with Lithuania.

On October 29, it was reported that Lithuania had completely closed the border with Belarus for a month. According to the government decree, the last two checkpoints, Myadininkai and Shalchininkai, have been shut down. Exceptions are made only for diplomats, transit traffic to Kaliningrad, as well as citizens of Lithuania and EU countries.

Subsequently, there were reports of the closure of the state border with Belarus for an indefinite period in response to incidents with balloons allegedly arriving from Belarusian territory.

Later, on October 31, Lukashenko announced that the weather balloons spotted in Lithuanian airspace were launched by the Lithuanians themselves from the territory of Belarus. According to him, the Lithuanians who arrived in Belarus bought cigarettes from Belarusians, who, in turn, bought them locally, after which they transported the purchased goods to the territory of the country using weather balloons.
