Economist's Day in 2025 — the history of the holiday

The history of the Economist's Day is inextricably linked with Russia's oldest public economic organization, the Free Economic Society. The decree on its creation was signed by Catherine II on November 11 (new style), 1765.

The Imperial Free Economic Society had a significant impact on the development of the country. Its participants dealt not only with financial and economic issues, but also with educational work — members of the society gave lectures, held agricultural exhibitions, analyzed the performance of enterprises of the empire (thus laying the foundations of national statistics), and also advocated universal primary education.

In the second half of the 19th century, the Free Economic Society gained a reputation as a center of liberal thought, whose representatives demanded that the government carry out reforms as soon as possible. Among other things, thanks to the efforts of its members, serfdom was abolished in Russia in 1861.

In 1919, the Imperial Free Economic Society was abolished. The revival of this organization began in the 1980s, and in 1992 it was renamed the Free Economic Society of Russia.

In 2015, the Day of the Economist appeared on the Russian calendar — the corresponding order was signed by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation. November 11, the day of the establishment of the Free Economic Society, was chosen as the date for it. It is noteworthy that since 2011, Russia has also officially celebrated Financier's Day, dedicated to the anniversary of the signing by Emperor Alexander I of the Decree on the Ministry of Finance. It falls on September 8th.
