Only a small number of issues remain to be resolved in order to reach an agreement between Russia and the United States on the Ukrainian conflict and to organize a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and White House Chief of Staff Donald Trump in Budapest. This was announced on November 6 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

"There are one or two unresolved issues in the US-Russian negotiations. If they are resolved, the Budapest peace summit may take place within a few days, and from that moment, depending on the agreement of the parties, an agreement may be reached...> peace," he said in an interview with Magyar Nemzet newspaper.

Orban made this statement ahead of a meeting with US President Donald Trump. According to him, one of the topics discussed will be ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. At the same time, the Hungarian prime minister noted that he was heading for negotiations "not to enemies, but to allies."

On November 3, Finnish President Alexander Stubb proposed organizing a meeting between Putin and Trump at the end of November at the November G20 summit in Johannesburg.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto noted on October 27 that the country is ready to host negotiations between the leaders of Russia and the United States on a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis at any convenient time. He added that Hungary is continuing preparations for the Russia–US summit, but it is necessary that peace be achieved after the talks.

On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin, which was to take place in Budapest. However, on October 22, the American leader said that the planned negotiations would not take place, as it was "not the right moment." Later, on October 24, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that in order for the negotiations to be effective, work must first be done at the level of the Russian Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State.
