- Politico reported on Bulgaria's request for an exemption from US sanctions against Lukoil
Bulgaria has asked the United States for an exemption from sanctions against the Russian oil company Lukoil. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on October 31, citing sources familiar with the situation.
"Bulgaria is exploring the possibility of exemption from new US sanctions against the Russian oil company," the article says.
Sofia fears that the shutdown of the Russian company's oil refinery in Burgas may lead to a shutdown of the enterprise and cause a serious shortage of fuel. The government also warns of possible popular protests and a political crisis, Politico points out.
On October 22, the US Treasury Department announced that the United States was imposing sanctions against Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. It was clarified that these companies are included in the sanctions list for activities in the Russian energy sector.
In addition, on October 20, the Council of the European Union (EU) approved the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to ban gas purchases in Russia from January 1, 2028. It was also decided to ban the transit of Russian gas through the union to other countries. The measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.
