Hundreds of Lithuanian trucks stuck in Belarus due to border closure
After the temporary shutdown of the Myadininkai (Kamenny Log) and Shalchininkai (Benyakoni) checkpoints on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, several hundred trucks of Lithuanian transport companies cannot return to the country. This was announced on October 30 by the national association of Linava trucking companies.
"We ask the government to urgently hold a meeting with representatives of the transport sector in order to find a solution for the return of the carriers' vehicles to Lithuania and ensure the further movement of goods," LRT quoted the carriers as saying.
It is claimed that some drivers are forced to look for detours through Latvia and Poland, but huge queues have formed there. Some carriers are unable to cross the border due to the fact that they have already been registered by the Belarusian services.
Along with this, there is an increase in costs and disruption of supply chains. Also, some drivers face problems with supplies and rest.
The day before, Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus for a month. We are talking about the Myadininkai and Shalchininkai checkpoints. It was noted that exceptions will be introduced at the Myadininkai checkpoint, in particular for diplomats, as well as for citizens of Lithuania and the EU. In addition, in exceptional cases, other persons will be able to cross the border through the mediation of the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On October 27, it was reported that the state border with Belarus was closed indefinitely in response to incidents involving balloons allegedly flying from Belarusian territory. Thus, according to the Lithuanian authorities, freight transport will not be able to cross the border.
