Six out of ten unemployed people in Belgium are foreigners. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on October 29, citing a report by the country's Employment minister, David Clarenval.

"We know <...> (migrants — Ed.) have a much lower command of national languages. <...> They may have difficulty understanding the institutional system. Therefore, we clearly need to focus on these people and pay special attention to them," he said.

Clarenval published the statistics and called them "pretty staggering." According to these data, 41% of the unemployed in Belgium are Belgians, the rest either have North African roots or are migrants from southern European countries.

"The main message is that everyone should work, including people of foreign origin," the politician said.

According to the newspaper, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever, who took office in February 2025, called Belgium's immigration policy "the source of all misery" and tightened the rules for visitors to stay in the country, setting higher income requirements and longer waiting times for visas for relatives.

Starting in 2026, the Belgian government is implementing a plan to end unemployment benefits for those who have not worked for more than 20 years. In the future, benefits will only be paid for two years. In this regard, 180,000 Belgians will lose their payments next year, which will allow the state about €2 billion euros.

On July 4, the German Interior Ministry announced that Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is looking for allies in Europe to tighten the migration policy of the European Union (EU) and, in this regard, plans to convene a summit of interior ministers of the union countries in the German city of Zugspitze on July 18.
