The change in the position of US President Donald Trump on Ukraine was unexpected and raises questions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, speaking at the International Conference on Eurasian Security in Minsk on October 28.

"It was amazing that suddenly President Trump went back to positions that, it would seem, have already been worked out and reflect only the feverish desire of the Europeans and the regime of [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky will get a pause to pump up the Kiev structure with weapons again," Lavrov told Interfax.

According to him, Moscow hopes that the "logic of establishing long-term peace" in Washington will prevail. "We hope that President Trump remains sincerely committed to resolving the Ukrainian crisis and remains committed to the principles that were developed at the Anchorage summit," the minister stressed.

Lavrov also noted that the leaders of most European countries "are doing their best to convince the US administration to abandon the idea of a negotiated settlement in Ukraine." According to him, it is the European members of NATO who continue to "prolong the armed conflict by pumping weapons into the Kiev regime and providing it with political support."

Earlier, on October 27, Trump said that the conflict in Ukraine could become the ninth of those that he had settled. According to the American leader, he has already completed eight wars in the world, but acknowledged that resolving the Ukrainian crisis may be more difficult than conflicts in the Middle East.
