The refusal to comply with the principles laid down 80 years ago when the United Nations was founded leads to increased global instability and multiplies regional conflicts, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, speaking at an event at the UN General Assembly in New York. According to him, the crisis in Ukraine provoked by the collective West and the escalation in the Middle East, which resulted in an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, are clear examples of this. This year, Russia is one of the few countries that did not criticize the UN, but rather reminded of its importance. What else Sergey Lavrov talked about in New York is in the Izvestia article.

Russia stands for compliance with the principles of the United Nations

80 years ago, the United Nations was created to save the next generations from the scourge of war and to promote social progress. And only based on the principles of the organization can we count on the development of all states, without exception, both large and small. This was stated by Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the Group of Twenty ministerial meeting on September 25.

However, not everyone follows the prescribed rules. For example, Western economic sanctions are hitting not only Russia or other countries where they are imposed (and there are many of them), but also the most vulnerable segments of the world's population in general. They also cause serious damage to the global economy.

— Failure to comply with the principles of the [UN] Charter is a manifestation of neocolonial ambitions, leading to increased global instability and multiplying regional conflicts. A good example is the crisis in Ukraine provoked by the collective West, through which NATO and the EU declared a real war on my country and are directly involved in it. The escalation in the Middle East is in the same row. The unprecedented humanitarian disaster in Gaza has already claimed the lives of 65,000 people. Some UN staff working in the Middle East say there are estimates indicating that there are ten times as many victims," the Russian minister noted.

Summing up his speech, the Minister recalled that the motto of the current South African presidency is "Ubuntu". It means: "I am because we are," and reflects the South African philosophy of the interconnectedness between peoples, the need to show loyalty and humanity in human relations. Sergey Lavrov expressed the hope that it is in this vein that the numerous problems of our time will be solved.

Palestine demands recognition

In December, it will be 65 years since the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, the Minister recalled.

The situation around Palestine remains one of the central topics of this session of the UN General Assembly. Russia recognized its statehood back in 1988. Like most UN countries. Over the past few weeks — that is, after the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people on both sides — the United Kingdom, Australia, Portugal, France, Belgium, Luxembourg have done the same.

The crisis in the Gaza Strip, discussed in the high offices of the organization, has gone far beyond. On the streets of New York, especially near the United Nations, you can find the attributes of the Palestinian state. Daily pro-Palestinian protests and marches have long been the backdrop of the high week of the General Assembly.

Walking through the streets of New York, one can also find a more persistent manifestation of upholding the interests of this people. There are periodic skirmishes, quite massive, which are carefully dispersed by the American police. One of these occurred literally on the evening of September 24 near the Hyatt Grand Central hotel.

Speaking to the United Nations via video link (the United States did not issue visas to the Palestinian delegation), Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called Israel's actions in Gaza a crime against humanity and genocide.

At the same time, he condemned the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and said that the movement had no future in the Palestinian authority, calling on its supporters to lay down their arms.

Palestine was actively supported from the rostrums of the United Nations by Turkish President Recep Erdogan, who called what was happening in Gaza "the bottom of humanity."

The creation of the State of Palestine is actively opposed on all platforms by Israel and the United States. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country will respond "to the unilateral recognition [of Palestine] by a number of countries after the end of the UN General Assembly." At the same time, despite the increasing pressure from the world majority, Israel, as Netanyahu noted, will continue to build Jewish settlements in the West Bank of the Jordan River.

And Donald Trump, continuing his active efforts to resolve all existing conflicts, has developed his own plan for Palestine. According to the Financial Times, it involves sending military personnel from Arab countries to Gaza and creating a Palestinian committee for interim administration. The Israeli army should also withdraw to the March 2025 line, and after the situation stabilizes, completely leave the exclave.

Like the Palestinian leadership, Washington sees no future for Hamas in governing Gaza.
