Sudden movements of the neck can in rare cases lead to arterial dissection and subsequent ischemic stroke. Anastasia Agayeva, a general practitioner at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia about this on October 29, World Stroke Day.

According to the expert, the danger is not the crunch itself, which occurs due to the friction of the ligaments, but a sharp twisting or pressing effect on the cervical region.

The doctor explained that aggressive massage or sudden tilting of the head can cause damage to the vertebral or carotid artery wall. This leads to the formation of a blood clot, which can block the blood supply to the brain. Agayeva named congenital arterial anomalies, connective tissue diseases, whiplash injuries after an accident, as well as sports with incorrect neck movement techniques among the risk factors.

To prevent stroke, the doctor recommends avoiding extreme neck positions during physical exertion, avoiding dangerous manipulations during massage, and regularly practicing physical therapy for muscle stiffness.

"For example, in yoga classes, it is recommended to avoid poses that require extreme tilting of the head back or sudden twisting of the neck. Dangerous neck manipulation by other people, such as a massage therapist without special training, should be prohibited. The appearance of a feeling of stiffness in the neck and the desire to make a "crunch" is most often associated with tension in the muscles. This can be corrected with the help of physical therapy classes," the therapist explained.

Blood pressure control, smoking cessation, a healthy diet and at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week are also important measures.

Anna Koptseva, a neurologist at the Vidnovskaya Hospital, told on September 12 how to help herself with a migraine attack. She noted that pain should not be tolerated: it is better to take the medicine at the very beginning of the attack, but the doctor should prescribe the drug. Koptseva also warned that taking medications too often can cause headaches from medications.
