- The political scientist assessed the struggle between the government and the opposition in Georgia
The Georgian authorities have all the arguments to ban opposition parties. This was stated by Archil Sikharulidze, founder of the SIKHA Foundation Research Institute, in an interview with Izvestia.
"We saw an attempted coup on October 4, which was launched by representatives of the radical opposition. It is quite logical that now these forces should be punished. They are unlikely to be able to interfere with this process. I would advise other parties that are not currently facing a ban to dissociate themselves from the radicals in order to remain in the political space," he emphasizes.
Earlier, Irakli Kirtskhaliya, a representative of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said that in the near future a lawsuit would be sent to the Constitutional Court to ban the United National Movement, which was founded by former President Mikhail Saakashvili. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called the UNM a criminal political force.
General local elections were held in Georgia on October 4, and the ruling party won in all municipalities. After the vote, a protest rally was held in Tbilisi, including participants who tried to seize the presidential palace. The authorities accused foreign intelligence agencies of organizing the rallies.
