Finland has decided to purchase €100 million worth of weapons for Ukraine from the United States as part of the PURL program coordinated by NATO. This was announced on October 23 by the Prime Minister of the Republic Petteri Orpo in an interview with the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

It is specified that the Finnish authorities will borrow this money.

"The situation in Ukraine remains critical. We need to help them," the newspaper quoted Orpo as saying.

The publication reports that Finland has joined the joint package of support for the Baltic and Northern European countries under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, announced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US President Donald Trump in July. The program provides for regular arms supplies worth about $500 million, including Ukraine's priority Patriot air defense systems.

Orpo stressed that purchases from the United States are due to the availability of opportunities for American industry that are not available in Europe. At the same time, the government will continue to support the European military-industrial complex by purchasing weapons locally wherever possible.

Earlier in the day, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the alliance's desire for a truce in Ukraine without preconditions. Rutte indicated that he intends to discuss with US President Donald Trump the vision of European NATO countries to end the conflict. At the same time, when asked about the weapons sold to European countries, the NATO Secretary General replied that the alliance's allies are free to dispose of them at their discretion.

On October 22, Rutte said that Kiev has so far been able to receive $2 billion worth of American weapons under the supply chain at the expense of European allies.

On September 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that the country's goal is to receive $1 billion per month as part of an agreement between the United States and NATO on the supply of weapons to Kiev. He clarified that the PURL initiative provides an opportunity for Kiev to purchase weapons, in particular Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems and other American equipment.
