The first step towards negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine should be a cease-fire. This was stated on October 22 by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, answering questions from journalists after talks with US President Donald Trump, which took place at the White House.

"President [Trump] said this weekend <...> ensure a cease-fire. And then have all your discussions <...> we (the alliance. — Ed.) we fully agree on this," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Rutte also stressed that the American leader is making "every possible" effort to end the conflict.

On the same day, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty announced the desire of the head of the White House to join NATO on security guarantees for Ukraine. He also added that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump is necessary to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.
