The word "Internet" in modern Russian can be written with both uppercase and lowercase letters — both variants are considered normative and are fixed in reputable dictionaries. Alexandra Olkhovskaya, head of the Lexicography Laboratory at the Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language, told about this on October 19.

"In modern dictionaries, two equal spelling variants are fixed — "Internet" and "Internet". This means that the author chooses which option to use," the RIA Novosti expert explained.

According to her, initially the word was written only with a capital letter and was often enclosed in quotation marks, as it was perceived as a proper name — the name of a particular network. Over time, it began to denote a method of communication, like a radio or telephone, and therefore it began to be written with a small letter more often.

Olkhovskaya clarified that the rule does not apply to the words "Network" and "Web" in the sense of a global network — it is still recommended to write them with a capital letter to distinguish them from ordinary words, such as, for example, fishing net.

Earlier, on September 18, it was reported that the encyclopedia "Ruviki" introduced the use of artificial intelligence to update and protect materials. Technology helps the editorial staff automate content updates and verification, while the final control over publications remains with the scientific staff.
