How and where to write "n" and "nn" are studied in schools. But the spelling of words with these suffixes raises questions even among adults. We have compiled a guide on different parts of speech so that you can refresh your knowledge. For more information, see the Izvestia article.

N and NN in nominative adjectives

Izvestia reference

Nominative adjectives are adjectives formed from nouns.

For example: throne — throne, sleep — sleepy, swan - swan.

One N

— In adjectives formed with the suffix -in-, -an-, -yang-:

Goose;

Sandy;

Silver.

Exceptions: in the words glass, tin, wooden, "nn" is written despite the suffix -yang-.

— In adjectives that have the suffix -iy-, and the base of the generating noun ends in -n-. Basically, these adjectives denote belonging to animals:

Dolphinarium;

Peacock;

The monkey one.

Two N's

— The base of the generating noun contains an "n", the suffix adds another one:

Autumn — autumn;

Fog — foggy.

The stone is made of stone.

Exception: the word windy is written with one "n", but derivatives, for example, windless, with two.

— The suffixes -onn-, -enn- are used. Such words usually denote a feature or a relation:

The station;

Vital;

Morning.

N and NN in verbal adjectives

One N

— The adjective is formed from an imperfect verb without a prefix and dependent words. Such words denote a property, not a process.

To paint — colored;

Knit — knitted.

Roast is fried.

Two N's

— The adjective is formed from a perfect verb:

Solve — solved;

Buy — bought.

Exception: wounded, imprisoned, named (brother).
