In 5 billion years, the Sun will turn into a red giant and destroy the planets closest to it, including Earth, and then become a white dwarf. This was announced on October 10 by the head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI). RAN Sergey Bogachev.

"The sun is a star, and everything that has a beginning has an end. According to the theory of stellar evolution, in five billion years it will turn into a red giant, burn Mercury, Venus and Earth," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Despite this, according to the expert, during the entire time before the transformation, the Sun will steadily shine, providing comfortable conditions for life on Earth.
