Scientists have recorded the most powerful M4.4 class solar flare in two months. It occurred on August 5, 2025 and caused a moderate magnetic storm on Earth. After a short lull, geomagnetic activity will increase by August 8, with a 70% chance of a moderate G2 storm. Forecasts of magnetic storms for August and recommendations for weather—dependent people to maintain their health and well-being during the period of geomagnetic disturbances are in the Izvestia material.

Solar flares and magnetic storm on August 8: What to expect

Scientists have warned of the strongest magnetic storm in the last two months, which could occur as early as August 8, 2025. The intensification of geomagnetic activity will begin on the night of Thursday to Friday, after a series of powerful solar flares on August 5. According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of IKI and ISEF, the situation on the star is particularly tense right now: in just one day, 18 flares occurred at once, including two powerful Class M.

It is expected that auroras at this level of storms can be observed at latitudes up to 60 degrees, and sometimes up to 50 (the latitude of Moscow is 55.7 degrees). However, the strength of a magnetic storm will largely depend on the accuracy of the solar ejection trajectory. If the plasma cloud deviates by 3-5 degrees, the storm may not occur. But if the deviation is in the other direction, the event will be even more powerful — the probability of this is about 5%.

According to forecasts, starting from midnight on August 8, the speed of the solar wind near the Earth's orbit will increase to 600-700 km/s, which will cause a medium-level magnetic storm (class G2). Peak activity is expected around 6 a.m. Moscow time and the probability of a storm at this level is 70%. The magnetosphere will remain agitated for at least two days, on Friday and Saturday, then it will subside by Sunday.

Previously, it was assumed that the ejection on August 5 was not directed directly at Earth, but a revision of the data showed that the high-speed core of the cloud would still touch our planet, which explains the predicted increase in geomagnetic activity. This outbreak was part of a wave of activity that began on August 1 and was followed by a series of powerful events, including the fifth Class M outbreak in four days.

What is the forecast of magnetic storms for August

August as a whole promises to be relatively calm geomagnetically, without powerful and prolonged storms. However, several periods of moderate activity are expected: on August 19-20 and 28-30, when the Kp index may rise to 4 points. These periods are accompanied by small, short-term geomagnetic disturbances, which are unlikely to cause serious health and safety problems.

Most days of August are characterized by a calm or only slightly disturbed magnetosphere, which provides favorable conditions for the operation of satellites and human health, with the exception of the most sensitive to magnetic fluctuations. However, it is worth waiting for a few minor geomagnetic disturbances, especially on the 19th, 20th, 28th, 29th and 30th of the month — they will be less significant and will not cause a strong impact on the Earth. Based on current data, scientists predict several periods of increased geomagnetic activity.:

August 7-9 – G3 level magnetic storm (strong) due to the release on August 3 and 5;

August 12-14 – moderate disturbances (G2) are possible due to a new active zone in the Sun;

August 20-22 – the likelihood of a new severe storm (G3–G4), if additional Class X outbreaks occur.

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the USA) experts note that during the solar maximum period, magnetic storms can become more prolonged and intense.

Recommendations for those who are weather-sensitive during magnetic storms

During magnetic storms, it is important for weather-sensitive people to closely monitor their health and follow a few simple recommendations that will help minimize the negative impact of geomagnetic activity.

First of all, it is worth regularly checking forecasts of magnetic storms through official websites and applications in order to prepare in advance both psychologically and physically. It is also necessary to ensure proper sleep — it is recommended to sleep at least 7-8 hours in a comfortable environment: in a dark, quiet and cool room. Avoid stress and overwork, because during storms the body is especially vulnerable to emotional and physical stress. Meditation, breathing exercises, and outdoor walks help.

It is better to reduce physical activity: avoid heavy workouts and excessive loads, so as not to strain the heart and blood vessels. Drink more water — it helps to normalize metabolism and reduces the risk of blood clots. It is also important to strictly monitor your health, especially if you have chronic cardiovascular, nervous or other diseases. Do not forget to take your medications on time and consult a doctor if you feel unwell.

In addition, pay attention to nutrition — try to reduce your intake of salt, fatty foods, coffee, strong tea and alcohol. If possible, add vitamin complexes with magnesium, potassium and B vitamins to the diet after consulting with a specialist. Aromatherapy can be used to improve well-being: essential oils of lavender, mint or citrus fruits help relieve headaches and reduce anxiety.

Following these recommendations, weather-sensitive people will be able to more easily endure periods of geomagnetic disturbances and maintain good health during magnetic storms.
