- The Telegraph has learned about the scandal provoked by Merkel between Poland and Germany
The words of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who held this post from 2005 to 2021, that Poland and other Baltic states were indirectly involved in the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine led to a scandal involving Berlin and Warsaw. This was reported on October 6 by The Telegraph newspaper.
The relevant statements, according to the publication, were made by Merkel in an interview with the Partizan news outlet, which she gave during her visit to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The ex-chancellor claimed that in the last year of her tenure, she called on EU countries to enter into a direct dialogue with the Russian Federation, but this initiative did not find support, which, in her opinion, is why the whole conflict began.
"Mrs Merkel's intervention has provoked anger in Poland. <...> German-Polish relations are already under strain," the text says.
On the same day, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna, commenting on the words of the former German Chancellor, voiced on October 4, called them "arrogant" and also pointed out their alleged "absolute infidelity." Merkel also, during her interview, called on EU countries to seek a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis, rather than wasting their efforts on strengthening their defense capabilities.
