The European Commission (EC) plans to impose duties of 50% on steel imports exceeding the level of 2013. This was reported on October 6 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

"The European Commission intends to propose imposing duties of 50% on steel imports worldwide in excess of the quota," the article says.

According to industry experts, this step could be disastrous for the British steel industry, which is already going through a severe crisis.

The new European Union (EU) tariffs are expected to be even more devastating than the American ones and will disproportionately hit the UK, as most of its steel exports go to Europe. In addition, the British market may be flooded with steel displaced from the EU.

The head of UK Steel, Gareth Stace, warned of the possible collapse of many British steel companies and called on the government to urgently take measures to protect against the influx of imports.

"This is probably the biggest crisis the UK steel industry has ever faced. The government must do everything possible to use our trade relations with the European Union to ensure quotas for the UK, otherwise they may face disaster," he said.

The UK government said it continues to actively cooperate with European partners, awaiting full information on the plans and their impact on business in the country.

The FT reported on July 9 that the agreement with US President Donald Trump would result in the EU facing higher duties than the UK. It was clarified that the EU does not expect to get the same access to the American market as British steel, cars and other goods that are subject to industry duties.
