- The EC representative accused the Georgian authorities of undermining the EU accession process.
The Government of Georgia, where protests against the official authorities are currently taking place, is undermining the process of the country's accession to the European Union (EU) with its policy. This was announced on October 6 by the representative of the European Commission (EC) Anitta Hipper.
"Joining is a merit—based process. And so far we see that the Georgian authorities are jeopardizing this process (of joining the EU — ed.)," Hipper said during an EC briefing. The broadcast was conducted on the EC website.
According to her, the current events in the country are a "democratic setback", and therefore the EU has reduced political contacts with the country to a minimum.
A day earlier, the head of European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, and the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Affairs, Marta Kos, called on all parties in Georgia to refrain from violence after the elections in the country. Their statement also noted that the EU strongly rejects and condemns the misinformation about the EU's role during the protests in Georgia.
On October 4, protests against the ruling Georgian Dream party began in Georgia against the backdrop of the country's parliamentary elections. Izvestia correspondent Giorgi Jabishvili, who covered the protesters' march, noted that not only Georgian national flags could be seen in the crowd, but also American flags. In addition, during the protest actions, participants broke down the fence near the presidential palace in Tbilisi.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze accused foreign intelligence agencies of organizing the rallies and promised to give a strict response to all those involved. According to him, Georgia is not a country where foreign intelligence agencies can be given the opportunity to overthrow the government.
In September, the former President of the republic, Salome Zurabishvili, stated that the United States and Europe were losing Georgia in favor of Russia.
