ABC News reported the reason for the closure of the airport in Vilnius on October 5.
Vilnius Airport was closed on the night of October 5 due to cigarette smuggling carried by 25 small balloons. This was reported on October 5 by ABC News TV channel with reference to data from the National Crisis Management Center of Lithuania.
"Up to 25 small balloons, some of which <...> were carrying contraband cigarettes, entered Lithuanian airspace <...> and forced the closure of Vilnius airport," the publication says.
It is noted that due to the contraband balloons, 30 flights were delayed, on which about 6 thousand passengers were supposed to leave.
Earlier in the day, air traffic was temporarily suspended at Vilnius Airport due to the appearance of foreign objects in the air, presumably balloons. It is specified that flights were suspended the night before at 22:16 (local time, coincides with Moscow time).
Later, temporary restrictions on flights at Vilnius Airport were lifted.
