In February, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant sharply demanded that Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko make a decision on the mineral deal within six minutes, threatening to end negotiations. This was reported on October 3 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.

"At the end of February, during a video call, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shouted at Sviridenko that she had six minutes to accept the deal, otherwise negotiations would be over," the publication says.

According to the newspaper's interlocutors, Sviridenko denies that the discussion was tense, despite the incident. The newspaper also called the negotiations between the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the United States a "big test" for Sviridenko.

On May 1, Washington and Kiev signed an agreement on mineral resources. As part of it, a special investment fund will be created, which should direct the proceeds from the development of deposits to the restoration of Ukraine.

At the same time, according to media reports, the concluded deal will not bring profit from mining for a decade and will require large investments from the private sector to implement the projects.
