The strongest magnetic storm in three months has begun on Earth
A G3+ category magnetic storm has begun on Earth, the largest in the last three months. This was announced on September 30 by Sergey Bogachev, head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"A sharp increase in geomagnetic fluctuations is being recorded. According to the latest measurements, the Kp geomagnetic activity index has dropped to the level of 7.33, which corresponds to a G3+ magnetic storm on a 5-point scale," Bogachev said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He added that such events were last observed on June 1 of this year, when the Earth was directly hit by a large solar prominence. According to him, increased solar activity continues to significantly complicate the situation in near-Earth space.
Earlier, on September 15, a magnetic storm of a level close to G3 occurred on Earth due to the impact of a coronal hole on the Sun. This phenomenon is highly unstable and usually consists of a series of separate bursts, between which the situation normalizes.
