Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed Russia's principled position on the political settlement of the crisis in Yemen during a meeting with Chairman of the Governing Presidential Council of the Republic of Yemen Rashad Al-Alimi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (GA). This was reported on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 26.

"The Russian side has confirmed its principled position in favor of the absence of an alternative to a comprehensive political settlement of the Yemeni crisis by launching a broad national dialogue as soon as possible under the auspices of the United Nations," the ministry said in a statement.

During the conversation, the parties also discussed issues of traditionally friendly Russian-Yemeni relations. Lavrov and Al-Alimi stressed their commitment to maintaining regular political dialogue and continuing close coordination at the United Nations and other international venues.

Earlier, on May 28, Al-Alimi thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for the support of the internationally recognized government of the republic. According to him, a successful breakthrough has been made in bilateral relations in recent years. He also recalled that the Soviet Union was the first country to recognize the republic.
