The request for a career break is not a new phenomenon for the Russian labor market. According to a study conducted by the Russian School of Management, one in two working Russians ended 2024 in a state of burnout. On September 21, Yuri Troyankin, Director of Human Resources and Organizational Development at PROMOMED Group, told Izvestia when a career break is a normal practice, and by what criteria candidates with a gap in their resume are selected.

"It is important to understand that in organizations with unsettled management processes, a career break is unlikely to help. After returning, uncertainty in the goal-setting system, chaos in business processes and ineffective internal communication will quickly return the employee to the state in which he made the decision to temporarily leave," the expert noted.

According to him, break requests are most often related to the need to think about important career decisions, such as a significant promotion or relocation.

Troyankin drew attention to the fact that a career break should not become an obstacle for a candidate when applying for a job. It is important that it does not take too long. If the break is too long, it may be difficult to adapt to the new business realities. For an employer, the most important thing is the competence of an employee, his ability to adapt to changes and willingness to learn.

"At the same time, it is important to take into account the age of the candidate. Do not be surprised at the breaks in the seniority of young applicants. For representatives of generation Z, loyalty to the employer and long-term work in the same company are often not a priority. Unlike previous generations, they are less likely to linger in a place that requires them to constantly overcome difficulties," the HR Director emphasized.

The older generation, on the contrary, more often prefers long-term positions. These employees are more resilient to stress and work-related difficulties, but they are less adapted to the digital environment. While representatives of generation Z are rapidly mastering new technologies and becoming more efficient in technical matters, the expert concluded.

Alexey Karpunin, Director of Information Technology, founder of the IPWK Academy of IT Management, and Olga Romanova, HR Director of the Bazis IT developer, told Izvestia on July 26 that IT and engineering specialists remain the most in demand on the labor market, while their salaries significantly exceed the average. According to experts, the demand for DevOps engineers, machine learning (ML) specialists and critical power supply engineers is two to three times higher than the supply.
