Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft launched to the ISS
The Falcon 9 launch vehicle of the American company SpaceX with the new Cygnus XL cargo ship of Northrop Grumman Corporation launched from the spaceport in Florida to replenish supplies on the International Space Station (ISS). On September 14, a live broadcast of the launch took place on the NASA website.
The launch was carried out on Sunday at 18:11 local time (September 15, 01:11 Moscow time). On Wednesday, September 17, the Cygnus XL spacecraft is expected to dock automatically with the ISS. His mission is to deliver supplies to the space station.
This is the first launch of the new Cygnus XL spacecraft. Its key difference from previous models is the increased load capacity, which allows it to carry about 5 tons of cargo, while the standard Cygnus could take on board about 3.8 tons. The spacecraft will deliver to the space station, among other things, components for the production of crystals for semiconductors, equipment for the modernization of cryogenic fuel tanks and an ultraviolet disinfection system for water.
On September 13, the press service of the Roscosmos state Corporation announced that the Progress MS-32 spacecraft with a semiconductor synthesis unit and a new spacesuit for extravehicular activities docked to the ISS. It is noted that the cargo ship docked automatically to the Zvezda module of the Russian segment of the ISS at 20:23 Moscow time.
