The expert admitted a rise in prices for buckwheat in the medium term

In Russia, the cost of buckwheat may increase in the coming months due to a reduction in acreage, but this may be hindered by the presence of significant reserves of cereals. Anton Trenin, an expert from the corporate ratings group of the ACRA agency, told about this on September 14.

"Although a decrease in acreage may contribute to higher prices for buckwheat in the medium term due to a reduction in supply, the overall level of production and significant reserves will limit the possible price increases," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

He noted that the annual domestic consumption of buckwheat ranges from 350 to 400 thousand tons, whereas in the 2024/25 season, production exceeded 560 thousand tons. Due to record harvests in previous years, significant reserves accumulated in the country, which led to a decrease in purchase prices.

Trenin added that the increase in buckwheat imports in 2025 has not yet affected prices. He also clarified that the total buckwheat harvest may decrease by about a third, as fewer fields have been allocated for this crop. According to him, it has become less profitable to grow buckwheat compared to other, more profitable crops, so part of the area has been reoriented.

Earlier, on August 25, the Ministry of Agriculture reported that this year there will be an abundance of raw materials for the production of buckwheat groats on the Russian food market. The ministry noted that the buckwheat harvest has just begun, but the average crop yield is already 17.2 hundredweight per hectare, which is 3.7 hundredweight per hectare more than last year. Since the beginning of the harvest, 253.6 thousand tons of buckwheat have already been produced.
