There is a critical shortage of garbage in China that could be incinerated by local processing plants. This was reported on September 14 by the Financial Times (FT).

"Chinese waste recycling power plants are running out of garbage for incineration. Slowing down consumption, reducing the population and improving the waste disposal system leads to the fact that power plant operators face energy shortages," the article says.

According to the publication, ten years ago, the Chinese authorities invested in a huge network of incinerators to cope with the "garbage sieges" that cities suffer from. Currently, there are more than a thousand incineration power plants in China.

"To solve the problem of debris caused by China's rapid urbanization, incineration has become a relatively quick [solution]. Waste sorting may take longer, whereas in China, the construction of an incinerator may take less than two years," said Zhang Jingning, Secretary General of the Wuhu Environmental Center.

According to FT, Chinese factories are capable of incinerating more than 1.1 million tons of garbage per day, which "significantly exceeds the targets set by the government." Now, an increasing number of operators have to deal with the problem of excess capacity.

It is noted that due to the shortage of waste, some incinerators are idle for most of the year. Experts attribute the shortage of garbage to China's shrinking population and slowing economic growth. Stricter rules for sorting household waste have also been affected.

Earlier, on August 12, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper reported that researchers from China have developed a launcher to remove dangerous space debris that orbits the Earth. Specialists, using a closed gas that absorbs the energy of the installation, managed to make it so that, while doing its job, it does not create smoke, does not emit light and does not vibrate when fired. This means that the process of removing space debris can be started without any harmful impact to the launch platform.
