- RAN: An unexplained magnetic storm hit the Earth on the night of September 10th
At night, a magnetic storm suddenly struck the Earth. This was announced on September 10 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
"A completely incomprehensible and difficult to explain magnetic storm was unexpectedly registered on Earth on Wednesday night. The event was absent from the forecasts, which were completely colored green the day before," the laboratory said in a Telegram channel message.
The press service notes that scientists are still unable to explain the reason that caused the violent reaction of the magnetic field. It is clarified that the graphs of the solar wind propagation did not show threats in the form of plasma clouds that could cause geomagnetic disturbances.
Experts have suggested that the event could have been caused by the formation of an unusually large substorm, a phenomenon in which the energy of the magnetosphere is released by internal processes without external causes. Auroras were also recorded on this day, which confirms the possible occurrence of a substorm.
On September 2, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the IKI RAS announced the beginning of planetary-scale magnetic storms on Earth. It was noted that the aurora zone will be formed in Canada and the Scandinavian countries. It is possible to observe this phenomenon in the north-western regions of the Russian Federation.
Then, on the night of September 7, there was a flash of the penultimate power class in the Sun. According to the Institute of Applied Geophysics (FSBI "IPG"), an M1.2 flare was recorded in the X-ray range in the group of spots 4207 (N28W16), the duration of which was 10 minutes.
