About 4 thousand students study in branches of Russian universities in Kazakhstan. This was stated on September 10 by Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, at a meeting with students of the branches of Moscow State University and MGIMO in Astana.

"There are about 4,000 students studying in Kazakhstan today in 8 branches of leading Russian universities, including two flagships — Moscow State University and MGIMO," the Russian Deputy Prime Minister said.

The Deputy Chairman of the government called Moscow State University and MGIMO world-class brands and noted the contribution of employees of Kazakhstani branches to their development.

"Today, Russia is undergoing a transformation of the higher education system. <...> Branches of Russian universities, since they teach according to our programs, will also switch to this [new] model," he added.

According to Chernyshenko, this year students will have more than 30 joint events of different formats. Right now, the guys from Kazakhstan are participating in the BeregA Youth Educational Forum in Astrakhan, and in a week they will come to Nizhny Novgorod for the World Youth Festival.

The Deputy Prime Minister also stressed the cooperation between Russians and Kazakhstanis in the field of the development of the volunteer movement and invited volunteers to the forum "We are together" in Moscow in December.

"As President Vladimir Putin says, our countries are united by a common history and a huge number of interpersonal and humanitarian ties. Russia is a reliable economic and political partner of Kazakhstan. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also stressed that Russia is Kazakhstan's main strategic partner and reliable ally. Our task is to develop together. Our two peoples have overcome many difficulties and have repeatedly offered each other a brotherly shoulder," Chernyshenko stressed.

On the same day, Chernyshenko discussed with Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov the tourist flow between the two countries. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that in the first half of 2025, the tourist flow from Kazakhstan to Russia amounted to more than 1.03 million trips, and in the opposite direction - 1.23 million.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported on August 31 that Putin spoke with Tokayev during a reception for guests of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China. He noted that the leaders of the two countries sat together at the table and had the opportunity to communicate.
