NASA will send astronauts to Mars in the early 2030s
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration is preparing an ambitious program for the exploration of the Moon and Mars. According to Sean Duffy, in the coming years, NASA plans to deliver cargo to the Moon to create a permanent base that will become a "springboard" for flights to the Red Planet. He said this on September 3 in an interview with Fox News.
"We want to start sending payloads to the moon to build a base there, and then go to Mars in the early 2030s. It will be an eight—month mission," Duffy said in an interview with Fox News.
He clarified that in April next year, NASA expects to launch a spacecraft with four astronauts to fly around the Moon, and then land the crew on its surface.
The Artemis program includes three phases, including a manned flyby of the Moon and the subsequent landing of astronauts. These missions will be the preparation for the first ever human flight to Mars.
Earlier, on August 5, Duffy announced plans to accelerate a program to build a nuclear reactor on the moon. The reactor's capacity will be 100 kilowatts. It was noted that this plan is related to the second space race, namely, reaching the Moon and Mars ahead of Russia and China.
