Merz called the doors for Moldova's accession to the EU open
Moldova is geographically close to Europe and is almost a part of it, and therefore the doors for the country's accession to the European Union (EU) are already open. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference in Chisinau on August 27.
"The doors to the European Union are open. We are sincerely glad to welcome you to the European Union," Politico newspaper quoted Merz as saying.
The press conference was held jointly with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who, along with Merz, are in Chisinau on an official visit.
"Moldova's choice to join the European Union is a choice in favor of peace and the rule of law," Macron said.
Macron, Tusk and Merz arrived on an official visit to the Moldovan capital to take part in the celebration of the republic's Independence Day. As the Politico newspaper noted, the goal of European politicians is to support the Moldovan elites' desire for European integration.
On August 24, Russian Ambassador to Moldova Oleg Ozerov said that the EU was openly interfering in the country's affairs, hiding behind slogans of European integration. According to him, this is reflected in the allocation of grants to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), which are mainly engaged in discrediting relations with Russia.
