The expert spoke about the danger of mosquito bites
Mosquito bites are not only a source of discomfort such as itching and irritation, but can also provoke health-threatening consequences, including severe allergic reactions and even serious illnesses. Denis Aksenov, a doctor of the highest qualification category, pediatrician, neonatologist, anesthesiologist, resuscitator and expert of the educational project on blood and plasma donation "+Ya", told about this on August 26.
Severe reactions to a mosquito bite are rare, but they are still possible - allergy sufferers, young children, and people with weakened immune systems may react more strongly. If you experience symptoms such as severe swelling or fever in yourself or your child, be sure to consult a doctor," Aksenov shared in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».
Although mosquito bites are often not dangerous, they can cause allergies and carry infectious diseases. In Russia, the risk of such infection is lower than in tropical regions, but it still exists.
"The most dangerous diseases carried by mosquitoes are malaria, West Nile fever, dirofilariasis and some arbovirus infections. They are rare in Russia — as a rule, there are several dozen cases per year," the expert said.
Dirofilariasis is a disease caused by parasitic worms that is transmitted through the bites of mosquitoes infected with larvae. In Russia, this is a rare disease, with fewer than 100 cases reported per year. However, due to the warming climate, its distribution and geography may increase.
For protection, doctors recommend using repellents, using mosquito nets, and staying away from places where mosquitoes congregate in the evening.
"In Russia, the probability of contracting a severe infection through a mosquito bite is extremely low. But reasonable precautions will not be superfluous. It is worth taking the prevention of "mosquito—borne" infections a little more seriously if you are planning a trip to a region where they are widespread," the expert concluded.
On August 19, Natalia Otdelnova, director of the Scientific and Practical Center for Integrative Medicine, spoke about the symptoms of infection after a tick bite. According to her, after being bitten by this insect, a person may develop a rash, dizziness, headaches and general malaise.
