The physicist warned about the consequences of a strong solar flare
The strongest solar flare since mid-June has caused a magnetic storm on Earth, which can negatively affect the well-being of some people and cause radio interference. This is stated by a leading researcher at the Space Research Institute (IRI). RAN Nathan Eismont told on Monday, August 25.
"When a plasma clot meets the Earth, it does not meet with the Earth's surface, but with the Earth's magnetic field — fluctuations in the magnetic field begin," Eismont said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
He specified that the current magnetic storm will last just over a day.
"Different people perceive it differently. The vast majority do not feel this in any way, but there are those who do. <...> There are those who really feel bad at some point while this magnetic storm lasts, and it, in general, continues," said Eismont.
The scientist added that people may experience mild discomfort during a magnetic storm, such as a headache. In addition, technical systems, mainly space satellites, suffer from magnetic storms, but radio can also experience interference, the expert noted.
He advised citizens to take reports of solar flares and magnetic storms more calmly.
Earlier in the day, at the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IRI) The Russian Academy of Sciences reported that the most powerful flare has been recorded on the Sun since June 20 this year, RT reports.
According to the laboratory, such an event occurred due to a sharp increase in solar activity, which is associated with the appearance of several large active centers on the visible side of the solar disk. 360.ru .
On August 22, a powerful Class M flare was recorded on the Sun at 21:51 Moscow time. Its duration was 72 minutes.
Earlier, on August 15, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the IKI RAS reported that a large coronal hole is forming on the Sun, which can cause an increase in the speed of the solar wind and lead to an aggravation of the geomagnetic situation.
