The countries participating in the Geneva Conventions should exert maximum pressure on Israel to stop the offensive in the Gaza Strip. This was announced on August 20 by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

"The states parties to the Geneva Conventions are obliged to immediately exert maximum pressure on Israel so that it immediately stops the offensive, which threatens to cause an unprecedented humanitarian crisis threatening human lives," the UN website says.

The organization added that the Israeli offensive threatens to permanently eliminate the Palestinian presence in the largest urban area of Gaza. According to the authors of the statement, the UN is already witnessing a repeat of the methods and means of warfare that led to mass killings, serious injuries, forced displacement, arbitrary detention, starvation and extensive destruction during previous military operations in Northern Gaza and Rafah.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched an offensive on Gaza City on August 20. It is located in the Palestinian enclave of the same name. It was noted that Israel currently controls the outskirts of the city.

In preparation for the operation to capture the city of Gaza, the IDF called up 60,000 troops from the reserve and extended the service life of 20,000 reservists. The operation was called "Gideon's Chariots – 2".
