UN Secretary-General Guterres called for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip following the start of the occupation of the city by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This was reported by the Reuters news agency on August 21.
"It is vital to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, it was necessary to avoid the deaths and destruction that a military operation against the Gaza Strip would inevitably cause," Guterres said during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development.
The IDF launched an offensive on the city of Gaza on August 20, located in the Palestinian enclave of the same name. It is noted that Israel currently controls the outskirts of the city.
Also, in preparation for the operation to capture the city of Gaza, the IDF called up 60,000 military personnel from the reserve and extended the service life of 20,000 reservists. The operation was called "Gideon's Chariots – 2".
