American business is switching to settlements in rubles with Russia

The share of the ruble in Russia's import payments with the American region in April-June reached a record 64%, according to data from the Central Bank (Izvestia analyzed them). In response to the editorial's request, the regulator noted that the macroregion includes North and South America.

Compared to the second quarter of 2024, the share increased 2.2 times — it was 29% then. Russia is now actively promoting its currency, which helps to increase its resilience to external economic shocks. The expansion of its use in trade strengthens financial sovereignty and creates conditions for long-term stability, says Igor Rastorguev, a leading analyst at AMarkets.

Currently, direct transfers in dollars are almost impossible. Therefore, business has found alternative payment methods through intermediaries, Sergey Katyrin, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, told Izvestia.

According to him, the Russian importer pays for the delivery in rubles, the money passes through an intermediary bank in a third country, and only then the American supplier receives its dollars. In rare situations, American companies use rubles inside our country, for example, if there is a branch or representative office.

Nevertheless, the bulk of the funds goes through conversion, Sergei Katyrin said. At the same time, he noted that some companies from the United States pay in rubles for their purchases of Russian goods, from fertilizers to metals.
