Periodontitis, especially its aggressive form, is one of the most serious diseases of the oral cavity, which without treatment can lead to tooth loss and significantly reduce the quality of life. On August 21, Tatiana Morozova, a dentist at the Medicine and Harmony clinic, told Izvestia about the key causes of its development and preventive measures.

The specialist explained that modern medicine has rejected the diagnosis of "periodontal disease" in favor of "periodontitis." The main manifestations of the disease are the formation of gingival pockets, the discharge of pus from them, tooth mobility, as well as progressive atrophy of the bone tissue surrounding the tooth.

"It is quite easy to diagnose the disease. Usually, the patient himself complains of tooth sensitivity, lowering of the gum level, inflammation and tooth mobility. The diagnosis is confirmed by X—ray examination, which reveals atrophic changes in bone tissue," the doctor said.

As for the causes of the disease, they are diverse. This includes a genetic predisposition, a violation of trophic (nutrition) tissues, malocclusion, as well as banal poor oral hygiene. Also, complications after improper prosthetics or treatment should not be discounted.

Separately, the expert focused on the possible connection of periodontitis with the general state of health.

"Several clinical studies have tried to identify a link between osteoporosis and periodontal disease, as both conditions involve bone loss. This issue has not been fully studied, but many mechanisms of pathology development are similar," she added.

To prevent the development of severe periodontitis, the doctor recommends strict adherence to hygiene rules and maintaining overall health. It is extremely important to undergo medical examinations to avoid the development of chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and blood, which negatively affect the condition of the oral cavity.

"A patient diagnosed with periodontitis must visit a dentist regularly at least once a year. It is necessary to regularly carry out professional oral hygiene, treat caries in a timely manner and get prosthetics in the absence of teeth in order to avoid overloading the remaining ones," Morozova summed up.

Earlier, on August 4, dentist, maxillofacial surgeon Veronika Melekhova spoke about the dangers of fillings from marketplaces for dental treatment. According to the dentist, during the installation of the filling, doctors remove caries and treat its complications, sometimes restoring the shape of the tooth with a filling. All this is done in sterile conditions, not to mention the constant disinfection of the treatment site. When a person tries to put a seal himself, he does not pay attention either to the tooth disease or to proper disinfection.
