Western countries could provide Ukraine with three security guarantees. The New York Times (NYT) reported on this on August 19.

"One of the concepts involves the creation of full—fledged "peacekeeping forces", presumably armed, which will complement the Ukrainian armed forces," the publication says.

It is noted that such a military contingent will be used exclusively for defensive purposes. At the same time, the problematic nature of this option lies in the need to involve "tens of thousands" of military personnel for these purposes.

"The second possibility is that the stretching forces are much smaller in number," the newspaper reports.

In this case, Western military personnel could not provide a really serious defense. However, as the author notes, the very presence of Western forces in Ukraine can have a deterrent effect. At the same time, the theory has not been tested to verify its operability, and it itself is "quite risky."

"The third option is to create an "observer force." They could be small, numbering about several hundred troops. In fact, they would have to report on the upcoming hostilities," the publication suggests.

It is specified that a similar task can also be solved using satellites and ground-based cameras. At the same time, even the military personnel stationed in Ukraine would not be able to organize defense in the event of an escalation of the situation.

Earlier in the day, the head of the diplomatic service of the community, Kaya Kallas, said that the European Union (EU) intends to train soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and strengthen the defense industry as part of the promotion of security guarantees for Kiev.

Prior to that, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said that the United States would discuss acceptable security guarantees for Ukraine with the Russian Federation. She added that the United States does not rule out air support as part of such guarantees.
